Ramon Stoppelenburg Wants to Break Into the Movies

I first found about about my friend Ramon Stoppelenburg when we were both Internet panhandlers in the early part of the decade. My site of course was Dating Amy, his was Let Me Stay for a Day.
Let Me Stay was a pretty amazing project–Ramon’s goal was to travel around the world for free and it took off immediately. His site caught the attention of the media and had millions of hits, which garnered the Dutch native 3,577 invitations from 72 countries. I think he visited about 24 of those countries.
Ramon and I are both too lazy to write this blog post, so from wikipedia:
The travels took Stoppelenburg through the Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, South Africa, Spain, Australia and Canada. Coverage by international media[1][2] and the number of visitors to the website allowed Stoppelenburg to have everything sponsored: his website, clothing, camera, backpack, shoes and even his airline tickets.
As I correctly predicted just recently, once a cyberbeggar, always a cyberbeggar: Ramon is back to his Internet begging ways. Sort of. He wants to buy The Flicks cinema in his new home of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It looks like he’s already raised a few grand. He is a good guy, so help him out if you have an extra dollar or two.
If you’re thinking of trying Internet begging, there is one caveat: To be successful you have to be born on December 20 as Ramon and I both are.

Good God. I’m coming into the home stretch with my young adult paranormal romance.
I’ve written 175 pages in the past six weeks. That is lightning-fast for me, because I am not a speedy writer. I really wanted to get to 300 pages and finish by March 1, but sadly it looks like that is not to be. Damn February and its short number of days. It would have been so excellent for me psychologically to be done before I flip the calendar over, but there’s no way.
Oh, but I love my characters and their swooning and their problems and their magic! Good times. I cannot wait to start editing. I haven’t let myself read anything I’ve written so far, so it will all be (sort of) new to me when I read it–the second week of March, I guess.
After the YA PR is written, I will attempt to get on the Stephen King-recommended schedule of writing in the morning and editing in the afternoon.
The next project I want to write will either be the L.A. memoir (which I think I’ve written 200 pages of?) or my self-publishing experiment, which I’m thinking may be part of a true-crime book I wrote from 2008-2010. No one knows what to do with it, including me. I tried to integrate a relationship memoir with this ripped-from-the-headlines story and… it hasn’t worked yet. Although everyone who’s seen it has said it’s an intriguing idea.
Also, I’m getting a lot of love from the independent film community and I’m not quite sure why that is. Big sloppy love right back at ya, though, guys. I’m a great believer in the cosmic flow or whatevs, so there must be a reason that in the past couple months I’ve 1) Broken a news story about a classic Seattle theater closing, 2) Been mentioned by the Independent Film Channel and 3) Been given a pep talk by one of my favorite filmmakers, indie upstart Kevin Smith.
I don’t know what it means, but it means something and I’m gonna figure it out after this teen novel is done.
Until we meet again, I’ll be off surfing the universal waves and typing ’til my arms fall off.

I broke the story that Seattle’s Neptune Theater was closing last November and the sad day finally came. So long, Neptune. You’ll be missed. Until you open again as a different kind of venue.

The beleaguered theater is using creative tactics to stay in business according to Seattlest.
They decided that the best way to keep things going was to sell all the theaters seats, or at least, sponsorship of the theaters seats. For just $100, you could own a seat in a theater, and presumable write your name or put your picture on the back of it

Seattle’s Columbia City Cinema Needs Your Help

At least this is a local Seattle cinema that’s not closing… yet.
You can buy shares of stock to help out the floundering Columbia City Cinema.
Fortunately for us, the theater is refusing to go down with out a fight, and has decided to make shares of the facility available to the general public. The theater needs to sell at least $50,000 $1 shares before the end of the year to remain in business
Seattle Landmark Neptune Closing Update

There was an announcement from the Landmark Theaters CEO this morning that the Neptune Theater in Seattle is closing in February 2011.
I called the corporate office of Landmark Theaters and they said that they have no plans to close 30 other theaters as I reported the other day, but their spokeswoman also said that it was news to her that the Neptune was closing, so there you go.
I will share with you that one of the rumors I heard was that it was an aggressive buy, not a case of STG bailing the theater out.
